The Statistical Abstracts are a collection of official statistics for the Free State and Republic of Ireland, published annually by the Department of Industry and Commerce (1931–1948) and the Central Statistics Office (1949–1997). These publications are the predecessors to the Statistical Yearbook of Ireland, which has been issued since 2002.
Despite their critical importance for understanding the socio-economic development of Ireland following independence, these data had never been systematically digitised until now. Thanks to funding provided under the Higher Education Authority’s North South Research Programme, the Centre for Economics, Policy and History (CEPH) has digitised series from the Statistical Abstracts in collaboration with the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The digitisation process prioritised series that are consistently available across the entire period. As a result, this data is now conveniently accessible in digital format online for the first time, often extending official CSO data back to the early 1920s. The inclusion of this data within the CSO’s data architecture ensures its preservation and long-term accessibility.
You can access this newly digitised data from the Statistical Abstracts in the CSO’s Open Data Statistical Database, PxStat, at https://data.cso.ie/product/CEPH.
