CEPH Associate Director of Research, Prof. Marvin Suesse, has been awarded the Peter Lindert-Jeffrey Williamson Prize for his 2023 book The Nationalist Dilemma: A Global History of Economic Nationalism, 1776–Present. The Peter Lindert-Jeffrey Williamson Prize is awarded by the Economic History Association every other year for an Outstanding Book in Global, African, Asian, Australian, and/or South American Economic History. Previous winners include Leigh Gardner, Ron Harris, Gregg Huff and Jared Rubin.
The Nationalist Dilemma offers a broad overview of the phenomenon of economic nationalism around the globe, covering a time frame from Alexander Hamilton to Donald Trump. It represents the most comprehensive study of the phenomenon to date, and is a staple of the literature on the subject.
When asked about the prize, Prof. Suesse said:
It is an amazing honour to receive this prize named after Peter Lindert and Jeffrey Williamson, two giants of economic history who have contributed so much to our understanding of the field. The “Nationalist Dilemma”, with its emphasis on foregrounding global and comparative perspectives to understand big questions surrounding the political responses to globalisation and inequality very much follows in their footsteps.
