Zhao Dong is an Assistant Professor in Economics at Trinity College Dublin. Her research lies at the intersection of economic history and political economy, with a particular interest in political institutions, elite recruitment, state organisation, and long-run economic development. Combining quantitative methods with historical evidence, her work examines how governments select and allocate officials, how bureaucracies respond to political and military crises, and how living standards have evolved over the long run. Her research focuses primarily on imperial China, alongside comparative work on political institutions across empires. She recently completed her DPhil viva in Economics at the University of Oxford and holds an MPhil in Finance from the University of Cambridge and a BSc in Economics from the University of Bath.
