On February 27th 2025, CEPH presented the Alice Murrary Distinguished Scholar Award to Professor Jane Humphries (University of Oxford), who delivered a lecture titled “Caring About Care, the Economic History of Caring Labour” in the Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin.
Professor Humphries is Emeritus Professor of Economic History at Oxford University, a Fellow of All Souls College, and Emeritus Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science. A distinguished economic historian, her research has transformed our understanding of labour markets, industrialization, and the roles of women and children in these fields. This lecture was a fantastic example of her groundbreaking research.
The Alice Murray Award honours Dr Alice Effie Murray (1877-1951), an economic historian who studied the history of commercial and financial relations between England and Ireland. In 1903, she became the first woman to receive a degree from the London School of Economics. Her thesis was subsequently published by P. S. King in 1907.
